Job Outlook

With more vehicles and more miles driven every year, collision losses are inevitable and insurance companies help settle these claims and pay for repairs. Claims department management is an essential part of the insurance process. Good managers will always be in demand.
Pre-Employment Education and Experience
A four-year college degree is required with advanced degrees preferred. Should have a minimum of five years experience in property claims. Knowledge and understanding of the collision repair business is important. Statistical analysis, human resource applications, and communication/presentation skills are essential.
Earnings
Depending on location, size of operation, and pay plan, earnings may start between $75,000 and $85,000. Experienced managers with proven results may earn much more. Benefits may include insurance, pension plans, and a company vehicle or mileage reimbursement.
Career Path
This is a middle-level-level management position. It usually is preceded by a supervisory position and can lead to upper management positions. This position can also lead to other related businesses including collision repair, new car dealerships, independent appraisal companies, manufacturers, and educational organizations.
Continuing Education
Internal company education programs for advancement or to meet state and local licensing requirements. Outside training through organizations including American Educational Institute (AEI), Automotive Management Institute (AMI), Insurance Institute of America (IIA), and Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters (CPCU).
